Description

There are bangles you slide on, and then there are bangles that open like a sentence mid-thought, inviting you in. This pair is set in brass, worked in the spirit of Polki, the oldest of India's uncut-stone traditions. Where Kundan sets stones into gold foil beds and Jadau fuses them with heat, Polki work prizes the raw, flat face of the stone itself, letting it catch light without the intervention of faceting. Here, that sensibility is translated into brass, a metal long favoured in festive jewellery across Rajasthan and Bengal for its warm, gilded resonance. The openable hinge closure, so characteristic of heavier ceremonial bangles, allows the piece to sit flush against the wrist without the strain of forcing it over the hand. Each bangle in the pair weighs a substantial 71 grams for both together, sized at 2.4, and the Polki stones are studded across the outer face in a densely composed arrangement that reads as richly as anything in precious metal. Wear these with a raw silk kurta in ivory or wine for a Diwali gathering, or layer them against a Banarasi tissue saree for a wedding reception where understated opulence is the intention. At size 2.4 and with the hinge mechanism, fitting is straightforward and secure. The brass base develops a gentle warmth with wear. The pair is practical enough for festive afternoons and considered enough for evenings that ask for something with genuine weight.
