Description

Colour is its own kind of language, and this belt speaks in many at once. Strung along a free-size chain that measures thirty inches (approximately 76 cm) in length, the piece belongs to a tradition of beaded adornment that stretches across the subcontinent, from the layered waist-jewels of Rajasthan to the hip-chain customs of South Indian classical dance. The beads themselves carry the weight of that history, each one threaded with deliberate rhythm to create a repeating, polychrome pattern that catches and holds the eye. At seventy-three grams, the belt sits with gentle authority at the waist, neither too delicate to be felt nor so heavy as to overwhelm the body's movement. The multi-colour palette, saturated and unapologetic, references the dyed glass and resin bead-work that artisans across Gujarat and Rajasthan have long used to ornament festive and ceremonial dress. Worn low over a hand-block-printed cotton kurta and slim palazzo trousers, it transforms an everyday silhouette into something considered and festive. For a more formal pairing, drape it above the pleats of a silk saree at a mehendi or sangeet, where its colour play will answer the embroidery without competing. The free-size construction means the chain accommodates a range of waist measurements comfortably. The beaded strand is lightweight enough for an afternoon gathering and requires only minimal care: keep it away from water and store it flat to preserve the threading and the integrity of each bead.
