Description
There are bangles you slip on, and then there are bangles that announce your arrival before you do. This pair belongs to the great Rajput tradition of surface-as-storytelling. Kundan settings, each stone pressed cold into a bed of refined lac and framed by gold-toned brass foil, are interspersed with the jewel-bright enamelling of Meenakari, a craft whose colours were first introduced to Jaipur by the craftsmen of Lahore in the sixteenth century. The vivid enamel fields, fired by hand and polished smooth, pool between the Kundan panels in shades that reward close attention. At the lower rim, a row of hollow ghungroo drops hangs in quiet suspension, shifting with every gesture and casting the faintest musical shadow of the dance traditions that first made ghungroo sacred. The openable hinge, discreet and precisely fitted, means no struggling with a rigid mouth. The entire construction is brass, lending each bangle a satisfying weight of one hundred grams for the pair. Wear them with a deeply embroidered Banarasi sari for a winter wedding, the Kundan catching candlelight at every turn. They translate equally well over the sleeves of a hand-block-printed kurta at a festive lunch, where the ghungroos provide their own gentle punctuation. Available in three sizes, 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6, the pair suits most adult wrists with ease. The hinge closure removes all anxiety about sizing, and the brass base keeps the bangles light enough for hours of continuous wear.
