Description
There are ornaments that adorn the wrist or throat, and then there are those that claim the waist as their canvas. The kamar challa is one of India's oldest body adornments, a chain worn low at the hip or clasped around the waist, its weight and drape as deliberate as a sari's fall. This piece is wrought in sterling silver, the chain substantial enough at fifty-three grams to settle with quiet authority against the body. At its centre sits an oval-cut labradorite, a stone whose interior shifts between deep slate and spectral flashes of blue and gold depending on how light finds it. The setting frames the stone simply, letting the labradorite's own schiller carry the visual work. There are no applied granules or filigree flourishes here: the appeal is in the clean weight of the silver and the mineral drama of the stone. Worn over a silk kurta and churidar for a festive mehendi evening, it reads as understated ceremony. Draped across the waist of a draped sari for a dinner gathering, it becomes an heirloom conversation. The chain measures 5.5 inches (approximately 14 centimetres) and is offered as free size, intended to sit at the natural waist or slightly below the navel depending on how it is styled. Sterling silver benefits from an occasional gentle polish with a soft cloth to preserve its cool, satin finish between wearings.
