Description

She arrives at the waist the way a deity should: unhurried, luminous, absolute. Rooted in the temple jewellery tradition of South India, this oddiyanam draws on the same devotional grammar that once adorned the processional idols of Nagercoil and Madurai. Cast in brass and finished to a warm antique gold, the centrepiece presents Goddess Lakshmi in high relief, her form flanked by symmetrical peacock and lotus motifs that radiate outward across the length of the belt. At eleven and a half inches long and two and a quarter inches wide (approximately 29 cm by 5.6 cm), the proportions are those of a true bridal vaddanam: broad enough to command attention, long enough to drape across a pleated silk waistline with authority. At 144 grams, the brass carries the satisfying gravity of considered metalwork, each panel linked by hand-finished chain connectors that allow an adjustable fit across the torso. Worn over a Kanjivaram silk saree with a heavily worked blouse, it becomes the centrepiece of a full bridal ensemble. For a contemporary pairing, anchor it over a crushed silk lehenga at a sangeet or a temple wedding reception, where its devotional iconography feels entirely at home. The free-size adjustable closure means the chain sits comfortably across a range of waist measurements without alteration. Brass resists tarnish well with occasional dry polishing; store flat, away from moisture, and this piece will hold its lustre for years of ceremonial wearing.
