Description

Worn on the wrist like a quiet incantation, these balas carry the unhurried grammar of Nepalese silversmithing. Crafted in pure silver and presented as a matched set of two, each bala is worked with hand-engraved motifs across its broad, circular face, a tradition deeply rooted in the hill-craft workshops of Nepal where silversmiths have long used repoussé and chasing tools to coax pattern from flat metal. The engraving reads as dense, meditative ornament, floral and geometric registers layered in the manner that distinguishes Himalayan silver work from the flatter, more linear vocabulary of the plains. At 2.5 inches in width and length (approximately 6.35 cm each) with a slim 0.25-inch (roughly 0.6 cm) profile, the silhouette is wide and confident without crowding the wrist. The pair weighs 68 grams in total, a substantive presence that speaks to the gauge of silver used rather than to filler. Wear both balas stacked on one wrist alongside a handwoven Benarasi sari for a festive gathering where heirloom weight is the point. Equally, slide them over the sleeve of a cream chanderi kurta at a mehendi or engagement, where unadorned silver against pale fabric does all the speaking required. Free size suits most adult wrists comfortably. The engraved surface develops a gentle patina over time; a soft silver-polishing cloth restores its brightness. No clasp or hinge is involved, keeping the form clean and the piece genuinely everyday.
