Description

There are adornments that remember the sea. The cowry shell has been worn as currency, talisman and ornament across the Indian subcontinent for centuries, threaded onto bodies long before gold was currency. This belly-chain revives that quiet, coastal intelligence. Each cowry is strung with deliberate rhythm along a beaded construction, the shells ivory-pale and tactile against whatever skin they meet. The beadwork between them is disciplined, not busy, holding the composition together the way a spoken sentence holds its pauses. There is no metal casting here, no stone setting: the beauty is entirely in the material itself, in the weight and cool smoothness of natural shell, a craft tradition closest in spirit to the tribal and coastal adornment cultures of Rajasthan, Odisha and the eastern shore. At seventy-one grams, it carries genuine substance without heaviness, and its twenty-eight inch length (approximately seventy-one centimetres) wraps the waist with a relaxed, unhurried drape. Wear it low on the hips over a gathered cotton lehenga for a festival with bare-earth colours, or layered across a simple silk sari blouse for a beach wedding where barefoot is allowed. The cowry reads as both ancient and completely at ease in contemporary styling. Offered in one free size, the chain accommodates most waists without adjustment. The beaded construction is lightweight enough for long hours of wear, and the cowries themselves are naturally durable, requiring only the gentlest care to keep their pale lustre unmarked.
