Description

There is something in a bridal ear chain that asks you to slow down and truly look. The mattal is one of South India's most ceremonial ornament forms, a chain that travels from the ear to the hair, anchoring the bride within a canopy of adornment. This floral pair renders that tradition in warm, burnished brass, each link shaped with the kind of considered patience that echoes the workshop towns of Tamil Nadu and Nagercoil, where such chains have long been fashioned for temple processions and wedding mornings alike. Floral motifs bloom at the anchor points, their petals holding the eye before the chain descends to pearl drops that sway with every movement. The pearls introduce a softness, a cool luminous counterpoint to the amber warmth of the brass. At six and a half inches in height (approximately 16.5 cm) and weighing forty-four grams, the pair carries a presence that is ceremonial without becoming heavy. Wear these with a silk Kanjivaram sari on a wedding day, the chain echoing the gold thread in the border. They work equally well against a tissue-silk lehenga for a sangeet, where their swing and shimmer catch candlelight with quiet drama. The free-size construction means the ear hook fits most piercings without adjustment. Brass, when treated with care, holds its warm patina over time; a soft, dry cloth after wearing keeps the finish even and the pearl drops luminous for every occasion that follows.
