Description

There is a particular pleasure in a bangle that opens. These broad cuffs, each standing three-quarters of an inch (approximately 1.9 cm) tall with an inner diameter of 2.05 inches (approximately 5.2 cm), belong to the school of antique-finish jewellery that draws its grammar from the havelis of Rajasthan. Worked in brass and burnished to a warm, oxidised tone, the surface carries uncut Polki-style stones set flush against the metal, their rough facets catching light the way old silver does in a museum vitrine. Punctuating the Polki are inlays of pink stone, soft as a Jaipur sunset, arranged in the repeating floral clusters typical of bazuband and choori traditions. The finish is deliberately aged, not distressed carelessly but treated with the restraint a skilled karigar brings to antique revival work. At 105 grams the pair sits with authority on the wrist without feeling burdensome. Wear both bangles stacked on one wrist over a mustard chanderi kurta for an afternoon gathering, where the oxidised brass reads like heirloom silver. For a festive evening, pair them against a deep wine silk saree, letting the pink stones echo the colour story of the border. The hinged, openable closure means the diameter accommodates most adult wrists without forcing the metal. Brass holds its antique patina well with minimal care. A soft cloth buff now and then is all this pair needs to remain quietly, reliably beautiful.
