Behind this piece
The Dandiya Raas is not merely a dance; it is a living archive of Gujarati devotion, performed during Navratri in honour of the Goddess. Here, that spinning, jubilant movement is translated into embroidered border work on art silk, the figures caught mid-twirl with coloured thread. Dandiya embroidery as a decorative motif carries a long tradition in western Indian textile arts, where festive narratives were woven or stitched onto fabric borders meant to edge dupattas, lehengas, and sarees. The whisper-white ground gives every embroidered dancer room to breathe, to move, to be seen.
How to style
For Navratri, cut this fabric into a wide dupatta to drape over a mirror-work choli and a flared chaniya in ivory cotton. The embroidered border sits beautifully at the hem. For a mehendi ceremony, fashion it into a flowy anarkali with the border running along the sleeves. Pair with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri chappals. For a relaxed festive brunch, stitch it into a boxy kurta worn over straight cigarette pants, letting the Dandiya border peek at the wrist and collar. Kundan studs complete the look without competing.
Fabric & care
Art silk, a woven viscose that mimics the lustre of pure silk, requires gentle handling to preserve its sheen and the integrity of its embroidered border. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation minimal to protect the embroidery threads. Do not wring; press the water out gently and dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight which yellows the white ground over time. Iron on a low-heat setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the embroidery. Store folded in a muslin cloth, never in plastic.
