the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that pulls thread through fabric with a precision no machine has convincingly replicated. Rooted in the ateliers of Kashmir and carried south through Lucknow and into Gujarat, the craft found a particular home among communities of Muslim artisans whose lineages in threadwork stretch back centuries. Here, the floral motifs follow a grammar of curved stems and layered petals, worked across net ground so the weave itself becomes part of the composition. The transparency of the base is not a limitation; it is the design.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut a narrow strip and run it along the hem of an ivory chanderi kurta for a formal dinner where restraint reads as confidence. Alternatively, sew two lengths as vertical front panels on a sheer organza saree blouse, worn with a tissue silk saree in blush or antique gold. For a festive occasion, use the border to trim a sharara dupatta, and pair with carved silver jhumkas and kolhapuris in natural tan leather. The floral repeat works equally well on day separates; a straight linen skirt finished at the hem becomes quietly ceremonial.

to last,

Fabric & care

Net is a knotted structure, not a woven one, and it responds poorly to agitation. Hand wash in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, working without wringing or scrubbing. Rinse once and lift flat from the water to drain. Dry on a clean towel laid horizontally, away from direct sunlight, which fades thread colour in embroidered work over time. Store loosely rolled around acid-free tissue rather than folded, as creases on net can distort the mesh permanently. Iron only on the reverse, at the lowest setting, with a pressing cloth between iron and embroidery.
