the story,

Behind this piece

Bagdoo block printing is a resist-printing tradition practised in the Bagru and Sanganer regions of Rajasthan, where artisan communities called Chippas have passed the craft through generations of hands. The process begins with natural mordants applied to pure cotton cloth, followed by carved wooden blocks pressed with precision into mineral and vegetable dyes. The result is never perfectly mechanical, and that is precisely the point. This kaftan carries that intentional imperfection: the slight bleed at the border, the warmth in the repeat, the breath of a craftsperson's rhythm absorbed into every yard of cloth.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this kaftan loose over narrow white cotton palazzo trousers for a Goa-coast afternoon that asks nothing of you. For evening, belt it softly at the waist with a hand-knotted jute or leather cord and add long oxidised silver earrings from Rajasthan or Kutch. A kolhapuri sandal in tan leather grounds the silhouette beautifully. For diaspora dressing abroad, layer it over straight linen trousers in ivory, finish with block-printed mojris, and carry a Channapatna lacquer clutch. The Vallarta blue reads as both festive and effortless across contexts and climates.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton block-printed cloth rewards gentle handling. Wash in cold water by hand using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; machine washing accelerates colour loss in natural-dye grounds. Do not wring: press the water out gently and dry flat in shade to prevent the fibres from distorting. Avoid prolonged sunlight exposure, which fades the characteristic blue tones over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded with a muslin layer between folds, away from synthetic fabrics that can transfer static and stress the weave.
