Behind this piece
Bandhani, one of India's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, originates in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat, where artisans have practised the precise art of tying tiny knots into fabric for over five thousand years. The resulting pattern, a constellation of dots and rings, mimics the scatter of moonlight across open water. Here, that ancient vocabulary meets an Anarkali silhouette, its hem anchored by a zari-woven floral border. Zari weaving itself carries Mughal lineage, threading gold into ceremony. The deep ocean tones and the rhythmic dot-work together hold centuries of coastal craft memory.
How to style
For a festive evening, wear this gown with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan leather and layered oxidised silver cuffs that echo the Kutchi aesthetic. At a mehendi or sangeet, pair the red dupatta draped off one shoulder and secure it with a pearl brooch for effortless drama. For a semi-formal daytime occasion, swap the dupatta for a structured Benarasi potli bag in crimson and choose juttis with mirror embroidery. In all three settings, keep the neckline bare or wear a single gold mangalsutra-style chain; the zari border carries enough ornament of its own.
Fabric & care
Art silk rewards gentle handling. Hand-wash this gown in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Turn the garment inside out before washing to protect the zari border from abrasion. Rinse thoroughly, then roll it in a clean cotton towel to draw out excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades bandhani dyes over time. Press on a low-heat setting with a pressing cloth placed over the zari border. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from humidity, to preserve the lustre of the silk threads.
