Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri artisans have wielded for centuries across the Vale. Unlike the more familiar Sozni work executed on the reverse, Aari is surface embroidery, each stitch pulled upward through fabric in a continuous chain. The motifs here follow the classic Kashmiri grammar: the paisley-like boteh, chinar leaves, and sinuous floral scrolls that once adorned royal shawls traded along the Silk Route. On turquoise satin, these colourful traditional forms carry the full visual weight of a craft that has survived empires, and endures.
How to style
For an intimate festive dinner, wear this kaftan with flat Kolhapuri kolhapuris in tan leather and oxidised silver jhumkas, letting the embroidery speak without competition. At a summer wedding reception, layer a fine ivory organza dupatta over one shoulder and finish with block-heeled mojris in ivory or gold. For a relaxed daytime occasion, a shoulder bag in woven Kutchi leather and barely-there champagne sandals keep the look grounded. In every case, keep the neck bare or choose a simple pendant; the Kashmiri motifs across the bodice are jewellery enough.
Fabric & care
Satin, whether woven from polyester or silk-blend yarns, is unforgiving of friction and heat. Hand-wash this kaftan in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, or opt for dry cleaning to protect the Aari chain stitches, which can snag if rubbed against other fabric. Never wring; press out water gently between two clean towels. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the turquoise ground and the embroidery threads. Store folded in a soft cotton muslin bag, never on a wire hanger, to prevent satin creasing and thread distortion over time.
