about the piece,

Description

A small canvas, a living tradition. Madhubani painting has long held the landscape of Mithila in its lines, telling stories of nature, ritual, and renewal through bold outlines and intricate fill. Here, those same ornate floral motifs are carried by hand onto pure triple-layered cotton, each stroke a quiet act of continuity. The three-ply construction offers comfortable, breathable coverage, while the hand-painted surface ensures that no two masks are entirely alike in character. Rooted in the folk art of Bihar, Madhubani's vocabulary of blossoming forms translates with surprising grace onto this small, everyday object, reminding us that craft need not wait for ceremony to be meaningful. At 7 inches by 5.5 inches, it sits gently across the face without overwhelming. Wear it against a simple kurta in white or ivory so the painted flowers hold the eye uninterrupted. It travels equally well into more considered, layered dressing, offering a point of heritage in an otherwise contemporary ensemble.

the story,

Behind this piece

Madhubani painting originates in the Mithila region of Bihar, where women once covered the walls and floors of their homes with images drawn from nature, mythology, and the rhythms of daily life. Flowers, fish, birds, and geometric borders were not decorative flourishes but devotional acts. Traditionally practised by women of the Brahmin and Kayastha communities, the art has survived for centuries through an unbroken oral and visual inheritance. Here, those same ornate floral motifs are carried onto pure cotton in miniature, each mask a small canvas honouring a very large tradition.

to wear it,

How to style

Pair this mask with a cream or ivory cotton kurta and straight-cut trousers for an afternoon at a craft fair or a cultural gathering, letting the painted florals speak without competition. For a more composed look, wear it alongside a handloom silk dupatta in deep red or turmeric and silver jhumkas. On a weekend errand, it works equally well over a simple kurta-and-jeans combination, grounded by kolhapuri sandals. The black outline work reads best against undyed, natural, or muted tones rather than busy prints.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand wash this mask gently in cold water using a mild, colour-safe detergent, keeping the painted surface away from vigorous scrubbing. Do not wring; instead, press lightly between a clean cotton towel to remove excess water. Dry flat or hang in shade, as direct sunlight will fade hand-applied pigments over time. Do not dry-clean. Iron on a low cotton setting on the reverse side only, never directly over the painted motifs. Stored flat in a breathable cotton pouch, this piece will hold its colour and structure across many wearings.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
