Sailor-Blue Long Jacket from Kashmir with Aari Embroidered Maple Leaf Pattern
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the fine hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries, drawing thread through wool and pashmina with a patience that no machine can replicate. The maple leaf motif here is distinctly Kashmiri in temperament: naturalistic, flowing, rooted in the valley's chinaar-shaded landscape rather than any borrowed design vocabulary. Worked onto a deep sailor-blue wool ground, each leaf is built stitch by stitch in the traditional tambour style, where tension and rhythm determine the final character of the line. This jacket carries that slow intelligence in every curve.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a cream or ivory kurta in chanderi silk for a winter wedding or a literary evening in a colder city. Let the sailor blue anchor a palette of ivory, ecru, and antique gold. Pair with straight-cut churidar in cream wool or fine cotton and slip on block-heeled kolhapuris in tan leather. For a more contemporary register, layer it over a fitted white turtleneck with wide-leg trousers in charcoal. Jewellery should be restrained: a single strand of freshwater pearls or oxidised silver studs that let the Aari embroidery remain the sole ornament.
Fabric & care
Wool breathes and remembers, but it is unforgiving of impatience. Hand-wash this jacket in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Support the full weight of the garment when lifting it from water to prevent the fibres from stretching. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry, away from direct sunlight, which fades deep-toned wool unevenly. Steam rather than press, holding the iron a short distance above the surface. Store folded, never hung, in a breathable cotton bag with a cedar block to discourage moths.
