Behind this piece
The golden border is among the oldest decorative vocabularies in Indian textiles. Woven as a separate trim, it draws from the tradition of kinkhab and zari weaving concentrated in Varanasi and Surat, where artisans have historically produced ornamental gold-thread fabrics for court dress and ceremonial costume. Art silk, a lustrous woven viscose, democratised this language of gold, making the shimmer of brocade accessible beyond silk. This border carries that lineage quietly, its continuous golden repeat suggesting the disciplined geometry found in loom-woven borders across Gujarat and Banaras both.
How to style
Sew this border along the hem of an ivory or deep red chanderi dupatta for a festive look that reads considered rather than costumed. It works equally well as a sari border replacement, stitched onto a plain tussar or cotton weave to create a custom drape suited to weddings or pujas. For a kurti, apply it along the neckline and sleeve edges, then pair with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri sandals in tan. The gold tone bridges warm ivory, forest green, and deep burgundy with equal ease.
Fabric & care
Art silk is a viscose-based fibre and reacts poorly to heat and harsh agitation. Hand wash this border in cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, avoiding any wringing or twisting. Rinse thoroughly and lay flat on a clean towel to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which causes viscose to yellow over time. Do not tumble dry. To press, use a low-heat iron on the reverse side with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent permanent crease lines along the gold thread.
