Behind this piece
The lotus, sacred across the subcontinent, has adorned Indian textiles for centuries, appearing in Mughal jali work, Kalamkari panels, and temple weaves from Kanchipuram to Paithan. This georgette saree carries that motif forward in a thoroughly contemporary register. Georgette itself, a crêpe-weave fabric with a distinctive granular hand, became a staple of Indian fashion ateliers through the mid-twentieth century, prized for its fluid drape and resistance to stiffness. The patch border adds a craft-conscious detail, recalling the appliqué traditions of Kutch and Pipli, where border embellishments were never decorative afterthoughts but considered statements of regional identity.
How to style
For an afternoon art-opening or gallery lunch, drape this saree in the classic Nivi style and pair it with a sleeveless silk blouse in a tone pulled from the print, ivory or deep green. Add oxidised silver earrings with lotus motifs for deliberate continuity. For festive family gatherings, a full-sleeve brocade blouse and kolhapuri heels in tan leather ground the look. For evening occasions, consider a backless blouse, a single polki pendant, and strappy gold sandals. Keep the pallu softly pleated to allow the multicolour print its full visual conversation.
Fabric & care
Georgette is a twisted-yarn crêpe and requires gentle handling to preserve its characteristic texture. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, ph-neutral detergent, turning the saree inside out before immersing it. Never wring or twist; press out excess water gently between two clean dry towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades printed colours over time. Steam-press on a low setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in soft muslin, never in plastic, to allow the fabric to breathe and retain its natural drape for years.
