Moonless-Night Pure Silk Long Jacket from Kashmir with Hand Aari Embroidered Paisleys on Border
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
There are silences that hold more beauty than sound, and this jacket belongs to that order. Woven from pure silk in a depth of colour that recalls the sky above Dal Lake when stars have yet to appear, it carries along its borders the fine vocabulary of Kashmiri aari embroidery. The aari hook, worked by hand across the silk ground, traces paisleys in the tradition that has defined the valley's textile identity for centuries, each curve a patient conversation between needle and cloth. Kashmir's aari craft is among the most labour-intensive of India's embroidery lineages, demanding a steadiness of hand that no machine can replicate or replace. The long jacket silhouette lends itself naturally to this kind of ornamentation, allowing the bordered embroidery to fall with unhurried grace along the hem and cuffs. Wear it over a column of ivory or cream silk for a considered evening appearance, or layer it across a plain woven salwar for afternoon occasions that deserve a quieter ceremony. Either way, the jacket speaks first.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the *aari*, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries to coax silk thread into fluid, unbroken lines across fabric. The paisley, or *kalka*, is the signature motif of the Valley: a form borrowed from the bent cypress, shaped by Mughal patronage, and refined through generations of family workshops in Srinagar and Anantnag. Here, on a ground of pure Kashmiri silk as deep and still as a winter sky, those paisleys travel quietly along the border, each one a small record of a living tradition.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a column of ivory or bone tissue silk, and let the embroidered border carry all the ceremony. For a winter wedding or mehendi, layer it over a dark churidar with Kolhapuri block-heeled mules and oxidised silver earrings. By day, it reads beautifully over straight-cut mocha trousers and a plain silk shell. For diaspora occasions abroad, pair it with wide-leg tailored trousers in deep burgundy; add a single strand of freshwater pearls to keep the look grounded rather than ornate.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is protein fibre: it loses strength when wet and is sensitive to both heat and alkaline detergents. Dry-clean is the safest choice for a hand-embroidered piece of this weight. If hand-washing at home, use cool water with a pH-neutral cleanser, never wring, and roll gently in a clean cotton towel before drying flat in shade. Press on the reverse with a cool iron and a pressing cloth. Store folded in unbleached muslin, away from direct light, to prevent the deep silk ground from fading or developing yellow patches over time.
