Lotus Crochet Border with Cut-work
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Behind this piece
Crochet lacework arrived on Indian shores through colonial-era trade, but found its truest home along the coasts of Goa and in the parlours of Bengal, where needlewomen transformed a European technique into something unmistakably their own. This border carries that inheritance forward. The lotus motif, rendered in cut-work silk, belongs to a vocabulary older than the craft itself, drawn from temple friezes and tank-edge carvings. Each petal is anchored by a single thread decision. The silk here is not decorative excess; it is the medium through which the design earns its luminosity and its weight.
How to style
Stitch this border along the hem of an ivory mul-cotton kurta for a summer lunch that asks for restraint with intention. In Bubblegum Pink, it lifts a pale grey chanderi dupatta into something occasion-worthy, paired with silver jhumkas and Kolhapuri flats. The Deep Lake colourway belongs on the pallu edge of a cream Maheshwari saree, worn to an evening cultural programme alongside oxidised silver cuffs. Daffodil works beautifully applied to the neckline of a white angarakha, complemented by raw-silk mojris in tan. Each colour answers a different light, and a different intention.
Fabric & care
Silk retains memory, and repays careful handling. Hand-wash this border alone in cool water with a pH-neutral detergent, working gently without wringing or twisting the threads. Rinse once, then press the piece flat between two dry cotton towels to draw out moisture. Never hang silk to dry in direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure bleaches its natural lustre. Iron on the reverse side using a low-silk setting with a thin pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store flat or loosely rolled in a breathable muslin cover, away from cedar and synthetic fragrance, which degrade silk fibres over time.
