Behind this piece
Block printing with vegetable dyes is one of Rajasthan's oldest textile traditions, practised most visibly in Bagru and Sanganer, where artisan families have pressed carved wooden blocks into fabric for generations. The crushed ghagra form itself carries deep roots in the everyday dress of rural Rajasthan and Gujarat, its gathered volume designed for movement, comfort, and layering. Vegetable dyes sourced from indigo, pomegranate rind, and madder lend these skirts their characteristically muted, breathable palette. The patch border is a further nod to the region's tradition of piecing contrasting textiles together into a single, harmonious whole.
How to style
Wear the first skirt with a white hand-spun kurta and Kolhapuri chappals for an unhurried afternoon at a craft bazaar. Pair the second with a tucked-in mirror-work blouse and oxidised silver jhumkas for a festive gathering that favours tradition over trend. Style the third over a fitted cotton slip and finish with mojris for a relaxed dinner where the print speaks for itself. All three respond beautifully to simple gold bangles, avoiding any accessory that might compete with the vegetable-dye palette's quiet, considered depth.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton printed with vegetable dyes demands gentle handling to preserve its colour integrity. Hand wash each skirt separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never soak, and keep the skirts away from direct sunlight when drying, as prolonged exposure will fade the natural pigments. Do not wring; press gently between towels and hang in shade. Iron on a low to medium heat while slightly damp. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin bag, away from synthetic fabrics, to allow the fibre to breathe and maintain its natural suppleness over years of wear.
