the story,

Behind this piece

Zari embroidery carries within it centuries of Mughal patronage, refined across the ateliers of Varanasi, Lucknow, and Surat into a language of gold thread and intention. The technique of couching fine metallic yarn onto fabric, historically reserved for court regalia, finds its expression here in dense floral motifs that move with the body rather than against it. Art silk, a considered alternative to pure mulberry, holds the thread tension beautifully, allowing the zari to sit flush against the surface. This ensemble speaks to a festive tradition that is ornamental without being excessive.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding reception, wear the Aventurine Green or Proud Peacock colourway with polki jhumkas in uncut emerald and ivory block-heeled sandals in raw silk. The Garnet or Purple Potion reads exceptionally well under indoor lighting at a mehendi gathering, paired with oxidised silver bangles and flat kolhapuris. For a pre-wedding lunch, the Honey Peach lends itself to a lighter sensibility: keep jewellery to antique gold studs and carry an embroidered potli. The dupatta, when worn off the shoulder, lets the lehenga embroidery take precedence entirely.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk with net requires dry cleaning for the embroidered dupatta and lehenga, as water weakens net fibres and can cause zari to tarnish or oxidise unevenly. If the kameez must be hand-washed, use cold water with a small amount of mild shampoo, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Lay flat to dry in shade. Store each piece separately in a soft cotton muslin bag, keeping the zari-embroidered surfaces face inward to prevent thread snagging. Avoid cedar balls near metallic embroidery. Refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease lines forming in the net.
