the story,

Behind this piece

Gota work traces its lineage to the royal ateliers of Rajasthan, where artisans in Jaipur and Ajmer once adorned bridal and ceremonial textiles with narrow ribbons of metallic fabric. The technique arrived in the subcontinent through Persian trade routes and found its most devoted home in the hands of Rajasthani karigar communities. Here, the gota border runs in quiet procession along the hem, while thread embroidery in the floral tradition of northern India blooms across the cotton ground, a fabric beloved for its breathability and its willingness to hold hand-worked embellishment without distortion.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this set to a daytime mehendi or a garden engagement, pairing the choli with its lehenga as nature intended, then layering a sheer ivory organza dupatta draped loosely over one shoulder. For footwear, choose block-heeled mojris in ivory or gold from Jaipur. At a festive lunch, swap heavy jewellery for a single strand of freshwater pearls and small gold jhumkas. If worn to a temple occasion or a Teej celebration, a floral hair braid with fresh marigolds completes the look with the ease that cotton naturally invites.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton breathes, but it also remembers rough handling. Hand-wash this lehenga choli separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, turning the garment inside out to protect the gota border and thread embroidery from friction. Do not wring or twist; press the water out gently and dry flat in shade to prevent any shrinkage or colour shift. Iron on a low cotton setting from the reverse side only. Store folded in a muslin cloth, not a plastic bag, so the fabric continues to breathe and the metallic gota retains its lustre across seasons.
