Kurti with Lukhnawi Chikan Embroidered Flowers and Sequins
Hand-wash gently with mild detergent. Do not wring. Dry in shade, iron on the lowest setting.
Description
Lucknow exhales slowly, and its breath is this kurti. Chikankari is one of the oldest embroidery traditions of Awadh, a craft that has been sustained for centuries by the hands of artisan communities in the lanes of old Lucknow. On this chiffon kurti, that lineage finds a contemporary expression: delicate floral motifs are worked in the characteristic shadow-and-thread style of the craft, then lit softly by the addition of sequins that catch light without demanding it. Chiffon is the natural companion to Chikankari, its sheer quality allowing the embroidery to breathe and the body beneath to remain cool. The palette, spanning mineral yellow, fuchsia pink, peach bud, and sheer lilac, carries the gentle saturation that Lucknavi textiles have always favoured, never loud, always considered. This is a piece suited to afternoon gatherings, festive lunches, and any occasion where dressing well is an act of quiet intention. Pair it with wide-leg cotton trousers and slip-on kolhapuris for an effortless warm-weather look, or layer a fine dupatta over one shoulder for a more ceremonial occasion.
Behind this piece
Chikankari is Lucknow's most enduring gift to Indian textiles, a tradition that flourished under Nawabi patronage in the eighteenth century and has never quite left the city's fingers. Worked by hand on fine fabric, each motif follows a vocabulary of stitches, murri, phanda, tepchi, bakhiya, that karigars learn over years of practice in the old mohallas of the city. On this chiffon kurti, sequins catch the light between embroidered flowers, adding a quiet luminosity to a craft that has always understood the elegance of restraint.
How to style
Wear the Mineral Yellow with ivory palazzo trousers and oxidised silver jhumkas for a daytime mehendi gathering. The Fuchsia Pink pairs beautifully with wide-leg white churidars and gold kolhapuri sandals for a festive lunch. Choose Sheer Lilac over a fitted silk slip and finish with pale pink pearl studs and strappy heels for an evening reception. Peach Bud works effortlessly with beige linen trousers and minimal block-printed juttis for a relaxed afternoon cultural event. Each colour reads differently under natural and indoor light, so consider both settings.
Fabric & care
Chiffon is a loosely woven filament fabric that demands gentleness above all else. Hand wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Support the embroidered areas while washing to prevent the chikankari threads from pulling. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which fades sequins and weakens chiffon fibres over time. Store folded loosely in a muslin bag, never on a hanger, which distorts the drape. Press on reverse with a cool iron, placing a thin cloth between the iron and the embroidery.
