about the piece,

Description

A procession moves across the cloth, unhurried and luminous, the way a wedding morning feels before the ceremony begins. This khadi cotton carries a Madhubani print drawn from the narrative tradition of Mithila, where women once painted entire walls with scenes of ritual, abundance, and divine passage. The motifs here echo that same visual grammar: figures in procession, borders alive with geometry, colour laid down with the confident hand of a tradition that knows its own worth. Khadi itself lends the fabric a particular honesty, its slight texture and breathable weave speaking of the handspun heritage that Gandhi once called the cloth of freedom. The palette ranges across ceremonial reds, festival greens, harvest golds, and the quieter register of powder green and ritual ivory, each suited to occasions that ask for intention rather than spectacle. Stitch it into a gathered skirt paired with a simple cotton blouse, or let a generous length drape as a dupatta over handloom separates. The fabric rewards slow dressing, the kind that begins with choosing what the occasion truly means.

the story,

Behind this piece

Madhubani painting originates in the Mithila region of Bihar, where women once drew sacred narratives directly onto mud walls using fingers, twigs, and natural pigments. The procession motif, with its ceremonial elephants, palanquins, and figure-work rendered in bold outlines, belongs to the Bharni and Kachni traditions passed across generations. Here, that ancestral visual language meets khadi cotton, hand-spun cloth that carries its own quiet history of self-sufficiency and resistance. The slight irregularities of the weave and the earthy cadence of the print together produce something no industrial loom can replicate: cloth with memory.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this fabric into a long kurta in Ceremony Orange paired with ivory wide-leg pants and kolhapuri chappals for a festive daytime gathering. For a contemporary silhouette, consider a gathered midi skirt in Festival Green worn with a plain khadi blouse and oxidised silver Mithila-motif earrings. The scarlet and harvest colourways lend themselves beautifully to a wraparound dress belted at the waist, ideal for a mehendi or seemant ceremony. Ground every look with minimal metal jewellery; the print is already its own ornament, and restraint lets the Madhubani figures breathe.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash in cold water using a gentle, ph-neutral detergent, keeping the first wash separate to assess colour behaviour. Do not wring; press the fabric gently between clean towels to remove moisture. Dry flat in shade, as direct sunlight will fade both the khadi weave and the printed pigments over time. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side, to protect the print surface. Store folded in muslin or cotton, away from synthetic fabrics and moisture. Treated with this care, the cloth will soften beautifully and hold its colour through years of wear.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
