about the piece,

Description

There is a colour that belongs to gardens at dusk, and this fabric holds it with quiet authority. Rooted in the ancient resist-dyeing tradition of Rajasthan and Gujarat, bandhani is among India's oldest textile arts, its characteristic dots born from the patient work of fingers tying thousands of tiny knots before the cloth ever meets the dye. Here, that vocabulary of gathered points is rendered across a satin ground, the fabric's lustrous surface catching light in a way that makes every printed motif appear to float. The deep Islamic green carries the weight of Mughal garden aesthetics, a shade historically associated with devotion, celebration, and ceremony. Satin lends the piece a fluidity and sheen that elevates it well beyond everyday wear, suggesting evenings of some consequence. Drape it as a dupatta over ivory or champagne kurta separates to let the green speak without competition. Alternatively, stitch it into a structured blouse for a bridal or festive ensemble where the printed bandhani patterning will read beautifully against silk skirts in ivory, gold, or deep red.

the story,

Behind this piece

Bandhani is among India's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, practised with extraordinary refinement in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat, and in parts of Rajasthan. Khatri artisans, whose families have shaped this craft across generations, gather the fabric into thousands of tiny pinched points, binding each with thread before the cloth meets the dye bath. The result is a constellation of undyed circles across a saturated ground. Here, that ground is a deep Islamic green rendered on satin, lending the ancient geometry of bandhani a luminous, almost ceremonial weight entirely its own.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined kurta for Eid gatherings, pairing it with ivory palazzo trousers and gold jhumkas that echo the circular bandhani motifs. Alternatively, drape it as a dupatta over a plain ivory or champagne anarkali, letting the emerald satin catch candlelight at a nikah or walima. For a contemporary register, a structured blouse cut from this fabric pairs beautifully with a cream silk skirt and block-heeled kolhapuris. In every case, keep accessories restrained: the depth of the green and the texture of the dots are ornament enough.

to last,

Fabric & care

Satin, whether woven from polyester or silk, demands gentleness at every stage. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum to protect the bandhani ties and the fabric's sheen. Never wring; press the water out gently and roll in a clean cotton towel. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades green pigments quickly. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in muslin, away from moisture, to preserve both the satin surface and the integrity of the tie-and-dye pattern.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
