Golden Zardozi Hindu Swastik Patch with Sequins
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
Few symbols carry as much auspicious weight as the Swastik, and here it arrives rendered in the luminous language of zardozi. Worked in golden metal-wrapped thread on a foundation of art silk, each stitch follows the discipline of a craft that has flourished in the ateliers of Lucknow and Delhi for centuries. Sequins are laid across the surface with careful intention, catching light in the way that only hand-placed embellishment can, giving the motif a gentle radiance that shifts with movement. Art silk lends the ground fabric a soft drape and a warm lustre, making it an ideal canvas for the density of zardozi work. This patch is sized for versatility, suited equally to bridal trousseau projects, festive garments, and devotional textiles where an embroidered blessing feels entirely in keeping with the occasion. Stitch it to the hem of a dupatta or position it at the centre of a cushion cover created for a puja space. It works with quiet dignity on the yoke of a kurta, wherever a moment of sacred ornamentation is welcome.
Behind this piece
Zardozi, the art of stitching gold into cloth, arrived in the subcontract courts of Mughal India and never truly left. Practised today in workshops across Lucknow and parts of Delhi, it involves coiling metallic threads, sequins, and wire over a base fabric to build relief and luminosity together. The swastik here is rendered in this tradition: an auspicious Vedic symbol given new weight through zardozi's patient hand. Art silk carries the sequin work with a lightness that heavier grounds cannot. This patch is not an ornament placed upon cloth; it is a prayer pressed into one.
How to style
For a puja or grihapravesh, applique this patch onto the hem or pallav of an ivory or deep red silk saree, then pair with polki or temple-gold earrings and kolhapuri heels. On a cotton kurta set worn to a festive family lunch, position it at the neckline or cuff for a considered, understated flourish. For a lehenga dupatta, place the patch centrally and let it anchor mirror or kundan jewellery around it. In every case, keep surrounding embellishment quiet so the zardozi gold speaks without competition.
Fabric & care
Art silk is delicate and responds poorly to machine washing. Hand wash this patch separately in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and do not wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which fades the sequins and weakens the metallic thread over time. Store rolled rather than folded to prevent crease lines forming across the zardozi work. Interleave with acid-free tissue if storing long-term. Light ironing on the reverse, with a pressing cloth between iron and patch, preserves the raised sequin work.
