the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has long held a peculiar genius for absorbing distant visual languages and rendering them in silk. This brocade patch carries a Tibetan dragon motif, a symbol of celestial power and auspicious transformation, woven on a ground the colour of frosted almonds. The tradition of incorporating Central Asian and Himalayan iconography into Banarasi silk weaving stretches back centuries, fed by trade routes and royal patronage alike. Worked through the intricate interlocking of supplementary weft threads, the dragon emerges in relief, its scales and claws disciplined by the loom's precise rhythm. It is devotion made textile.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this patch onto the hem of a deep-teal Banarasi silk saree for a winter wedding, and let the dragon anchor the entire drape with quiet authority. On a cream chanderi kurta set, position it at the yoke or sleeve-band for an editorial festive look; pair with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuris. For the diaspora wardrobe, apply it to the back of a structured ivory silk blazer worn over wide-leg trousers, finishing with carved bone bangles. The frosted-almond ground is persuasively neutral, obliging it to complement ivory, slate, burgundy, and forest green with equal grace.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre of considerable delicacy. Hand wash this patch separately in cool water using a pH-neutral, silk-specific detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently, then press the water out by rolling the piece inside a clean cotton towel. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which yellows and weakens silk over time. Once dry, press on the reverse using a cool iron with a cotton press cloth between the iron and the brocade surface. Store flat or loosely rolled in muslin, never folded along the same crease repeatedly, to preserve the silk threads and the brocade structure indefinitely.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
