Dark-Cheddar Long Jacket from Kashmir with Aari-Embroidered Paiselys in Green Thread
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, which Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the vale of Kashmir. Working on a taut fabric frame, the artisan draws thread upward in continuous chain stitches, building the sinuous paisley, or keri, that has defined Kashmiri textile identity since the Mughal period. Here, that lineage rests on pure silk in a deep cheddar ground, the green thread tracing each teardrop curve with the unhurried precision of a craft passed through generations of Muslim karigars in Srinagar and Baramulla.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a cream silk kurta and straight ivory palazzos for a heritage wedding reception, grounding the warmth of cheddar against neutral silk. For a literary festival or gallery opening, layer it above tailored moss-green trousers and a simple white cotton shirt. A Diwali dinner calls for pairing it with a deep burgundy churidar and gold juttis from Rajasthan. In each setting, choose uncut polki or antique gold jewellery rather than diamonds; the embroidery holds its own, and heavier stones compete where none should.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre and requires consistent gentleness. Dry-clean this jacket after every second or third wearing to preserve the Aari threadwork and the ground colour. If hand-washing is unavoidable, use cool water below thirty degrees Celsius with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk over time. Store folded in soft muslin, not polythene, and keep a cedar block nearby to deter moths without chemical damage to the fibre.
