Behind this piece
Zardosi is one of the oldest forms of metal embroidery practised on the Indian subcontinent, its lineage traceable to the Mughal ateliers of Agra and Lucknow where master karigars worked gold and silver wire into cloth for imperial courts. The craft involves a hooked needle called an aari, through which metallic threads, sequins, and stones are coaxed into intricate relief patterns on fabric. On this anarkali, zardosi arrives in vibrant hues against a creme-brulee georgette ground, the double-layered silhouette allowing the embroidery to catch light with every movement. The result is festive ceremony made wearable.
How to style
For a wedding reception, pair this anarkali with strappy gold heeled sandals and a choker-style kundan necklace that echoes the zardosi metalwork without competing with it. At a Diwali gathering, keep accessories minimal and let a single pair of jhumkas in antique gold complete the look. For a mehendi function, layer a sheer dupatta in a complementary jewel tone over one shoulder and finish with glass bangles in mixed hues. In every setting, a low chignon or twisted bun keeps attention on the embroidered yoke and the fluid fall of the layered georgette skirt.
Fabric & care
Georgette is a delicate crepe-weave fabric that demands careful handling to preserve both its drape and the integrity of the zardosi embroidery. Dry-clean only; do not attempt hand or machine washing, as water weakens the metallic threads and may cause sequins to detach or tarnish. After wearing, air the garment briefly before storing. Fold it gently along natural seams or hang on a padded hanger, never a wire one. Store inside a soft muslin bag away from direct light and moisture. Press only on the reverse, using a cool iron with a pressing cloth between the iron and the embroidery.
