the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen draw through fabric with a precision inherited across generations. Practised predominantly in the villages of the Kashmir Valley, this tradition flourished under Mughal patronage and never entirely left royal favour. On this charcoal silk ground, the needle traces its multicoloured path in the characteristically dense, chain-stitch spirals that distinguish Kashmiri Aari work from its counterparts elsewhere in India. The dark ground is a deliberate choice, allowing each thread colour to assert itself without competition, a practice long favoured by Srinagar's master embroiderers.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this kurti over straight-cut ivory silk palazzo trousers for a winter wedding lunch, anchored by Kashmiri silver filigree jhumkas that echo the needlework's intricate geometry. For an evening gathering, layer it over a slim black churidar and finish with block-heeled Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. On a more relaxed occasion, pair it with wide-leg handloom cotton trousers in off-white and a pair of leather mojris in antique gold. In each arrangement, keep the dupatta aside entirely; the embroidery commands the full surface and asks for nothing more above the waist.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk retains its lustre only when treated with patience. Hand-wash this kurti in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, working the fabric gently without wringing or twisting. Rinse once, then roll it in a clean cotton towel to draw out excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which dulls charcoal-dyed silk over time. Press on the reverse side using a cool iron over a pressing cloth, never directly on the embroidery threads. Store folded in soft muslin, away from moisture, and air it periodically to preserve the fibre's natural weight and sheen.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
