Behind this piece
Phulkari, meaning "flower work," is one of Punjab's most beloved embroidery traditions, practised across the Majha, Malwa, and Doaba regions for centuries. Originally created by women as part of a bride's trousseau, the craft uses silk floss thread worked in darning stitch on coarse khaddar cloth, building dense, luminous patterns from the wrong side. On these black leather jootis, that same floral vocabulary finds new life, each bloom a quiet echo of village courtyards and harvest festivals. The bold geometry of the phulkari motif grounds itself beautifully against the deep, polished leather.
How to style
Wear these jootis with a straight-cut ivory kurta and sharara trousers for a Punjabi celebration dressed in restrained elegance. For a winter wedding, pair them beneath a deep burgundy Banarasi saree, letting the embroidery speak against the silk's sheen. On a heritage walk or festive afternoon, they sit beautifully with block-printed cotton salwar suits in mustard or indigo. Complement each look with oxidised silver chandbali earrings or polki jhumkas. The black leather grounds bolder textiles without competing, making these jootis a reliable anchor across a wide range of festive and ceremonial occasions.
Fabric & care
Pure leather benefits from gentle, consistent care. Wipe the surface after each wear with a soft, dry cotton cloth to remove dust and moisture. Apply a small amount of colourless leather conditioner every few weeks to keep the material supple and prevent cracking. Avoid soaking or machine washing. Should the embroidery catch moisture, allow the jooti to air-dry naturally in shade, never near direct heat or sunlight. Store in a cotton dust bag, away from humidity, with tissue paper inside to retain shape. With attentive care, pure leather ages gracefully, developing a rich patina over time.
