Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the villages of the Valley. Unlike the more familiar sozni work, which passes thread through the fabric in fine running stitches, aari pulls the thread from beneath in a continuous chain, building dense, lustrous motifs with remarkable speed and control. The black fine wool ground here is a deliberate choice: it deepens every colour in the multicoloured palette and gives the traditional buta and border compositions the contrast they need to fully breathe. This is a craft sustained by families in Srinagar and Anantnag across generations.
How to style
Drape this stole loosely over a slate or ivory kurta-and-churidar pairing for a winter cultural evening; the black ground reads as quietly formal without effort. For the diaspora wardrobe, layer it over a camel-toned wool coat and let the tassels fall at the hem. At a daytime art exhibition or literary gathering, tie it in a soft side knot over a structured linen blazer. Complement any of these looks with oxidised silver earrings set with semi-precious stones, and keep footwear simple: leather juttis or pointed ankle boots in cognac or deep plum.
Fabric & care
Fine wool requires cold water and patience. Hand wash this stole in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated for wool or silk. Never wring or twist the fabric; instead, press water out gently between two clean dry towels and reshape the stole flat before drying in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the multicoloured embroidery threads over time. Store folded, never hung, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth with a cedar block nearby to discourage moths. With this care, the wool will soften beautifully across years of wearing.
