Description

She who governs abundance arrives first at the hairline. Rooted in the South Indian temple jewellery tradition, this damini head set honours Goddess Lakshmi through the visual grammar of devotional craft: layered florals, deity iconography and stone-studded surfaces worked in brass with an antique gold-toned finish. The mathapatti, measuring 12.7 inches (approximately 32.3 cm) in length, sweeps across the forehead in the manner of processional adornments once commissioned for temple idols and later adopted by brides of the Deccan and Tamil Nadu. At its centre the maang tikka descends 4.5 inches (approximately 11.4 cm) in height and 1.3 inches (approximately 3.3 cm) in width, framing a Lakshmi motif ringed by coloured stones set in the closed, bezel-style manner typical of temple pieces. The brass base, warm and receptive to patina, carries the weight of the tradition without apology. Together, the set weighs 59 grams, substantial enough to feel ceremonial against the skin. Wear it with a silk Kanjivaram for a wedding reception, where the gold-toned brass holds its own against zari borders. For a more intimate festivity such as Navratri or a griha pravesh, pair it with a chanderi silk kurta in ivory or deep red to let the Lakshmi motif command quiet attention. Free size in construction, the mathapatti adjusts easily through its chain length. The brass finish requires only a soft dry cloth to retain its lustre between wearings.
