Behind this piece
The Kashmir Valley has produced woven wool of extraordinary finesse for centuries, its craft traditions shaped by the region's harsh winters and a weaver community schooled in patience. This long jacket draws on the kani and twill-weave vocabulary that Kashmiri artisans have refined across generations, using wool yarns dyed in the bold, jewel-like palette the Valley is celebrated for. The multicoloured patterning reflects a living tradition of geometric and boteh-inspired motifs, where each colour transition is deliberate. To wear it is to carry something of that mountain light and that meticulous, unhurried craft outward into the world.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a slim ivory or ecru kurta in chanderi or cotton silk, with straight-cut trousers in a tonal neutral, for a festive daytime gathering. For cooler evenings, layer it over a fine merino turtleneck with tailored wide-leg palazzos in deep burgundy. Complete either look with juttis in handcrafted Punjabi leather or block-heeled Kolhapuris. Keep jewellery restrained: a single pair of silver filigree earrings from Odisha, or carved bone studs, allows the jacket's woven colours to remain the conversation. The jacket works equally well at a cultural event, a winter wedding, or a curated dinner.
Fabric & care
Kashmiri wool is a fine, natural fibre that rewards gentle handling. Hand-wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation minimal to prevent felting. Never wring; press water out gently between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, reshaping the jacket while damp. Do not tumble-dry or hang when wet, as the weight will distort the structure. Store folded, not hung, in a breathable cotton bag. Cedar blocks placed nearby will deter moths without chemical residue. With this care, the weave will hold its lustre and structure for many seasons.
