about the piece,

Description

A shawl that carries winter like a quiet poem on its shoulders. Worked by the hands of Kashmir's sozni embroiderers, this pure wool shawl bears a floral vine border rendered in the needlework tradition that has defined the valley's textile identity for centuries. Sozni, meaning needle in Kashmiri, demands extraordinary patience: each tendril, each petal, is set down in fine single-needle strokes that build depth without weight. The ground is pure wool, warm and yielding, with the natural resilience of a fabric made for mountain winters and long, unhurried evenings. Mars red, a colour with the gravity of old lacquer and ceremonial silk, gives the shawl a presence that needs nothing else to complete it. The floral vine border frames the drape with restraint, letting the embroidery speak at the edges rather than overwhelm. Wear it folded over the shoulders with a cream or ivory kurta to let the red come forward cleanly. It moves equally well over a simple merino pullover on a cool evening, the border visible at the front fold like a quiet signature.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni is the quieter, more meditative cousin of Kashmir's bolder embroidery traditions. Worked entirely by hand with a fine needle, it has been practised in the valleys of Kashmir for centuries, favoured by Mughal courts for its delicate, unbroken linework. The floral vine motif here follows a grammar of repeat that Kashmiri craftsmen call the *bel*, a continuous flowering tendril that moves along the border without ever quite resolving itself. On pure wool, the needle's thread sinks slightly into the weave, giving each petal a softness that machine work cannot replicate.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the Black Onyx or Purple Wine over a cream Chanderi kurta and wide-leg trousers for a winter evening gathering, anchored with oxidised silver jhumkas. The Dried Herb or Hunter Green reads beautifully against ivory handloom cotton at a heritage hotel lunch, draped loosely over one shoulder. For the diaspora winter, fold the Mars Red or Magenta Haze into a loose wrap over a merino turtleneck and dark trousers, finishing with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals or simple leather boots. The bordered edge should always remain visible.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure wool is a living fibre and rewards patience. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, no soaking beyond three minutes. Gently press out water without wringing; never twist. Dry flat on a clean towel, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the wool and the embroidery thread. Store folded, not hung, wrapped in muslin or acid-free tissue. Cedar blocks rather than naphthalene balls protect against moth damage without leaving chemical residue. With correct care, a Sozni-embroidered wool shawl remains a functioning heirloom across generations.
