Behind this piece
The angavastram is one of the oldest textile forms in the Indian subcontinent, predating tailored garments by centuries. Worn across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, it served as both ritual cloth and daily adornment for scholars, priests, and householders alike. The zari border woven into this cotton ground follows a tradition maintained in weaving centres such as Kanchipuram and Salem, where the interplay of matte cotton and metallic thread is understood as a grammar, not an ornament. In its white field, restraint itself becomes the statement.
How to style
Drape this angavastram over a crisp off-white kurta-pyjama for a temple visit or classical music sabha, allowing the zari border to catch the light at the shoulder. For a wedding reception, pair it with a silk veshti in ivory or pale gold, and finish with oxidised silver kada. A third reading: folded and placed over a sherwani lapel as a ceremonial shoulder cloth, complemented by Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. Each arrangement honours its original purpose while sitting comfortably within a considered contemporary wardrobe.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, as cotton fibres can weaken under heat and the zari border is sensitive to harsh chemicals. Do not wring; press gently between two dry towels and lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight which yellows white cotton over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting, reverse-side first, to preserve the zari's lustre. Store loosely folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from moisture. Properly maintained, this cloth will soften and improve with every careful wash.
