Behind this piece
The buti, or booti, is one of Indian textile's most enduring motifs. Derived from the Persian word for flower, it travelled through Mughal court patronage into the looms of weavers across Rajasthan, Bengal, and the Deccan, eventually finding its way onto everyday cotton weaves worn by women across the subcontinent. On this kaftan co-ord, the floral bootis are printed with a restraint that feels genuinely contemporary, recalling the quieter registers of block-printed cotton from artisan clusters in Jaipur and Bagru, where pattern and ground breathe together rather than compete.
How to style
Wear the set as intended for a Sunday brunch or a coastal holiday, then separate the pieces deliberately. Pair the kaftan top alone over straight-leg ivory trousers for a relaxed office afternoon. Layer the co-ord trousers beneath a structured linen blazer in warm sand for an evening out. In Arctic Ice, finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and flat Kolhapuri chappals. In Misty Jade, reach for brass kada bangles and block-printed canvas totes from Kutch cooperatives. Either way, keep the silhouette uncluttered; the bootis do the quiet, necessary work.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton of this weight rewards gentle handling. Wash in cold water on a delicate cycle, or hand-wash with a mild, pH-neutral detergent to preserve the printed motifs. Do not wring; press the water out softly and dry flat in shade to prevent the fibres from distorting. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, which relaxes cotton's natural creasing beautifully. Store folded rather than hung to maintain the fabric's weight and shape. Treated this way, the cloth will soften with each wash and grow lovelier with wear across many seasons.
