Behind this piece
The jooti is one of the subcontinent's oldest acts of adornment, rooted in the workshops of Rajasthan and Punjab where cobblers have stitched pointed-toe silhouettes for centuries. What distinguishes this pair is the marriage of cut velvet with hand-applied beadwork, a pairing that recalls the embellished court slippers of Mughal-era nobles. Velvet, long associated with ceremonial dress across North India, holds beads with particular grace, allowing each tiny glass or seed bead to catch light against a crushed, colour-saturated ground. The result is restrained yet quietly celebratory.
How to style
In Raspberry Sorbet or Pompeian Red, these jootis complete a ivory chanderi kurta-set with polki earrings for a daytime festive gathering. Trekking Green or Amazon Green reads beautifully against a mustard silk anarkali, anchored with oxidised silver bangles at a mehendi or sangeet. Jet Black is the most versatile: wear it with a charcoal georgette sharara for an evening event, or ease it into daily dressing alongside a printed cotton kurta and simple gold studs. Each colour rewards a different mood and occasion entirely on its own terms.
Fabric & care
Velvet is sensitive to moisture and pressure. Spot-clean only with a lightly dampened soft cloth; never submerge or machine-wash. Should the pile flatten, hold the shoe briefly over gentle steam and brush with a soft-bristled cloth in one direction to revive the nap. Keep away from prolonged sunlight, which fades jewel-toned velvet quickly. Store each jooti in a cloth bag, stuffed loosely with tissue paper to hold its shape. Avoid stacking heavy objects on top. With attentive care, the beadwork and velvet will remain vivid across many seasons of wearing.
