the story,

Behind this piece

The angavastram is one of South India's oldest textile forms, a length of unstitched cotton draped across the shoulder or chest as an expression of dignity and devotion. Woven on handlooms, this piece carries a border constructed entirely from multicoloured thread work, a technique rooted in temple-town weaving traditions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The border is not merely decorative; it is structural, built into the cloth during weaving rather than applied afterwards. Each colour repeat in that narrow band represents a loom setting adjusted by hand, a quiet act of precision repeated across the full length.

to wear it,

How to style

Draped over a crisp white kurta paired with straight-cut trousers, the angavastram's jewel-toned border reads as a considered flourish for a pooja, a naming ceremony, or a formal family gathering. Choose the Oxblood Red or Violet Indigo colourway against ivory silk and finish with oxidised silver kada bracelets and Kolhapuri sandals. For a contemporary register, fold it lengthwise and layer it over a linen shirt-dress in ecru. The Lemon Chrome and Tigerlily Orange variants work particularly well here, adding warmth without demanding attention. Carry a brass-handled clutch to complete the silhouette.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes freely and softens with each wash, but the woven thread border requires gentle handling to retain its colour and structure. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the cloth. The multicoloured threads may bleed faintly on the first wash, so soak separately for no more than ten minutes. Dry flat in shade to prevent the border threads from distorting. Store folded loosely in a breathable cotton pouch rather than a sealed plastic bag. With consistent care, this cloth will deepen in character over years of considered use.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
