about the piece,

Description

There are garments that ask nothing of you except that you slow down, and this is one of them. Worked by hand in the Lucknawi tradition, the chikankari embroidery here spreads across the full length of the kurta in the characteristically shadow-like stitches that have defined this craft for centuries. Artisans from the workshop clusters of old Lucknow coax each motif from pure cotton muslin using a vocabulary of stitches, among them the delicate murri, the airy jali, and the looping baakhia. The fabric itself is a considered choice: pure cotton that breathes generously in India's warmer months and carries embroidery without distortion or weight. Available in Aqua Glass, Cloud Cream, and Snow White, each shade amplifies the quiet elegance of white-on-white threadwork. This is a set suited equally to a festive afternoon, a family gathering, or an unhurried weekend at home. Pair it with kolhapuri sandals and a single strand of freshwater pearls for occasions that deserve a little ceremony, or let it stand entirely on its own for everything else.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's most enduring conversation between needle and cloth. Originating in the Mughal courts of Awadh, this shadow-work embroidery has been practised for centuries by artisan communities in the bylanes of Chowk and Nakkhas. Each motif, whether the delicate phanda, the raised murri, or the gossamer jali, is pulled through by hand. On this pure cotton kurta, the stitches travel across every inch of the fabric, turning a pastel ground into a landscape of quiet, accumulated patience. The softness of aqua glass and cloud cream only deepens the embroidery's whispered elegance.

to wear it,

How to style

For a morning gathering or a sun-lit puja, wear the cloud cream with kolhapuri sandals in tan leather and a single strand of freshwater pearls. The aqua glass reads beautifully at a daytime wedding: pair it with white nagra juttis and oxidised silver ear-drops for understated festivity. Snow white, the sharpest of the three, suits a formal iftar or an evening mehendi; ground it with ivory mojaris and a raw-silk potli in blush rose. All three colours carry a chanderi or tissue dupatta without overcrowding the embroidery.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes freely but asks for considered washing. Turn the kurta inside out and soak briefly in cold water with a mild, ph-neutral detergent; machine agitation will loosen the hand-worked chikankari stitches over time, so gentle hand-washing is strongly preferred. Do not wring. Roll in a clean towel to press out water, then dry flat in shade to prevent the pastel ground from yellowing. Iron on a low-cotton setting while slightly damp, always from the reverse side. Store folded in a muslin cloth rather than a sealed polythene bag, allowing the cotton to breathe.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
