Behind this piece
Meenakari, the ancient art of enamelling surfaces with vivid colour, travelled from Persia into Rajasthan centuries ago, finding its most devoted home in Jaipur. Traditionally applied to gold and silver by the Kshar community of goldsmiths, its visual language, of intricate floral medallions, geometric lattices, and solitary star motifs, has since moved into textile embroidery, where artisans interpret its jewel-like precision through thread and needle. This three-piece set borrows that starred, medallion grammar directly, translating the glint of enamel into surface embroidery on a structured, layered silhouette designed for ceremony and considered dressing.
How to style
For a daytime festive gathering, wear the kurta and pajama without the waistcoat, adding tan Kolhapuri chappals and a simple rudraksha bracelet. Come evening, layer the front-open waistcoat over the full set and pair with pointed-toe mojris in metallic leather for a complete sherwani-adjacent formal look. For a diaspora wedding or cultural programme abroad, the waistcoat alone worn over a plain white kurta reads as quietly authoritative. In each case, keep the neck uncluttered: the Meenakari embroidery at the chest does all the necessary work.
Fabric & care
Polycotton holds its shape well but requires gentle handling to preserve the Meenakari embroidery threads. Machine wash on a delicate cycle in cold water, turning the garment inside out before washing. Avoid soaking, which loosens embroidered stitching over time. Do not tumble dry. Lay flat or hang in shade away from direct sunlight, which can fade the embroidered colours. Iron on medium heat from the reverse side only, placing a thin cotton cloth between the iron and any embroidered sections. Store folded, not compressed, in a breathable cotton bag to maintain the fabric's body.
