Behind this piece
Block printing on cotton is among India's oldest textile arts, its roots reaching back to the karigars of Rajasthan and Gujarat, where wooden blocks carved from sheesham wood have transferred pattern onto cloth for centuries. The floral butta motif, a small, self-contained bloom repeated across the field of fabric, belongs to a vocabulary refined through generations of craft practice. On this lucent white cotton, each impression carries the slight warmth of hand, the barely perceptible variation that separates printed cloth from its mechanical counterparts. White ground fabric remains the purest canvas for this tradition, asking nothing to compete with the print.
How to style
Wear the co-ord set as intended for a weekend brunch or an afternoon gallery visit, finishing with tan Kolhapuri chappals and a single gold kada. For a more considered evening, layer a fine ivory Chanderi dupatta across one shoulder and swap sandals for block-heeled juttis in tan or rust. On cooler evenings, a relaxed khadi jacket in ecru works beautifully over the kurta, with the trousers worn straight. Keep jewellery minimal throughout: small oxidised silver studs or a thin antique gold chain suit the restraint of the white ground and the quietness of the floral butta.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton of this weight responds best to a cold or lukewarm hand wash in mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid wringing; press the fabric gently between clean towels to remove excess water. Dry flat or on a wide hanger, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow white cotton over time and lift the block-printed pigment. Iron on a medium setting while the cloth retains slight dampness, working on the reverse to protect the print. Store folded in a cool, dry drawer rather than compressed in a tight stack. Properly maintained, pure cotton block-print only softens and improves with age.
