Behind this piece
Dodama is one of Banaras's quieter glories, a weave structure in which two warp threads work as one to produce a fabric of exceptional drape and translucency. On this ivory chiffon, Banarasi karigar hands have placed all-over golden bootis, those small, self-contained motifs that carry centuries of Mughal garden imagery into every inch of cloth. The buti tradition in Banaras traces its refinement through generations of Muslim weaver families in neighbourhoods such as Madanpura and Reoti, where the jacquard loom still governs the rhythm of daily life. This is cloth made slowly, with intent.
How to style
Float this fabric into a hand-stitched kurta worn over wide ivory palazzos for a Diwali gathering; the golden bootis will catch candlelight beautifully. Alternatively, have it tailored into a flared anarkali with a silk lining, paired with polki earrings and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. For a quieter occasion, a straight gathered skirt in this chiffon worn with a matte ivory blouse and a single gold bangle reads understated and entirely assured. The ivory and gold combination suits both day receptions and evening mehendi ceremonies without alteration.
Fabric & care
Pure chiffon is a loosely woven filament fabric and rewards gentleness above all else. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum. Do not wring; press the water out gently between two clean dry towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows ivory tones over time. Iron on the lowest silk setting while the fabric retains slight dampness, placing a fine muslin cloth between iron and surface. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin bag, never compressed, to preserve the golden bootis and the chiffon's natural drape.
