about the piece,

Description

The colour of deep water at rest, this fabric carries the quietude of a Kashmir winter within every thread. Woven from pure wool in a plain, unbroken weave, it holds the particular warmth that only the high-altitude looms of the Valley can produce, where cold air and slow craft have always kept company. The neck is worked by hand in Aari embroidery, a technique native to Kashmir in which a hooked needle pulls thread into fine, looping stitches with a precision that no machine can replicate. The result is a neckline that reads as restrained from a distance and intricate up close, which is the signature of genuinely skilled needlework. Tailored to your measurements as a made-to-order piece, the fabric arrives ready to be shaped around you rather than adjusted after the fact. The Hawaiian Ocean shade, a cool, mid-depth blue, carries the rare quality of suiting both afternoon light and lamplight equally well. Pair it with ivory or ecru at the dupatta to let the embroidery lead. In cooler months, a fine pashmina stole in a tonal shade completes the silhouette without interrupting it.

the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery is one of Kashmir's oldest needle arts, worked with a fine hooked awl called the aari, which pulls thread from beneath the fabric to form dense, flowing chainstitches on the surface. Practised across the Kashmir Valley for centuries, it adorns everything from bridal shawls to phirans. Here, the craft meets pure Kashmiri wool in a restrained two-piece set, the embroidery confined to the neckline in a gesture of quiet luxury. The oceanic ground colour, drawn from the palette of Kashmir's summer skies, gives the aari work room to breathe.

to wear it,

How to style

For a cultural event or festive gathering, pair the kameez with a handwoven Banarasi silk dupatta in ivory or gold to let the embroidered neck remain the focal point. A straight churidar in warm ivory completes the silhouette neatly. For a cooler evening, layer a fine pashmina stole in camel or blush over the shoulders. Choose juttis in antique gold leather or block-heeled kolhapuris for footwear. Silver or oxidised silver jewellery, particularly a delicate choker, complements the aari neckline without competing with its detail.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure wool requires gentle handling to retain its structure and lustre. Hand wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, avoiding any wringing or twisting. Support the weight of the wet fabric fully when lifting it from the water. Lay flat on a clean dry towel, reshape gently, and allow to dry in shade away from direct sunlight. Never tumble dry. Store folded, not hung, in a breathable cotton bag with a natural cedar block to deter moths. Properly cared for, Kashmiri wool deepens in character with each season.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
