Behind this piece
Madhya Pradesh carries within its textile tradition a rare confluence of the woven and the printed, and this saree honours both. Zari, drawn in disciplined vine formations across a modal silk ground, meets hand-applied floral motifs in a conversation that echoes the craft corridors of Chanderi and Maheshwar. The dusty-blue ground, neither quite grey nor quite cerulean, belongs to a palette long favoured in the Malwa plateau's dyeing vocabulary. Modal silk itself, prized for its featherweight drape and luminous surface, gives the zari work its best possible stage: fluid, forgiving, and quietly radiant.
How to style
For a daytime cultural event, drape this in a Nivi pleat and pair with an ivory raw-silk blouse, block-heeled kolhapuris, and oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan. At a festive evening gathering, a deep burgundy velvet blouse reframes the dusty blue dramatically; add polki earrings and pointed mojris in bronze leather. For a diaspora wedding abroad, keep the blouse in self-fabric modal, layer a gossamer dupatta at the shoulder, and let antique gold bangles carry the ornamentation. The muted base invites bold blouses without ever feeling overwhelmed.
Fabric & care
Modal silk responds best to a cold-water hand wash with a pH-neutral, mild detergent. Do not wring or twist; press the water out gently between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which will fade both the printed motifs and the zari's surface sheen over time. Iron on a low-silk setting with a thin pressing cloth between iron and fabric to protect the zari threads. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe and prevent moisture-related tarnishing of the metallic work.
