SaleBehind this piece
Sambalpur, set along the Mahanadi river in western Odisha, is the heartland of Sambalpuri weaving, a tradition sustained by the Bhulia weaver community for generations. The ikat technique used here, known locally as Bandha, involves resist-dyeing individual threads before they meet the loom, so the pattern emerges through precision rather than print. The rudraksha motif woven into the border carries devotional weight, appearing across Sambalpuri textiles as a mark of sacred geometry. Dual-colour striped dhotis with matching angavastram sets represent the full ceremonial vocabulary of this craft, worn at rites of passage across Odisha and beyond.
How to style
For temple visits or upanayana ceremonies, pair this set with a plain white or off-white kurta in chanderi or mul cotton, letting the ikat border carry the ornamentation. Choose Vallarta Blue and Brown for a cooler, more contemporary reading alongside a slate-grey kurta. Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather complement the earthy brown tones without competing. For formal receptions, layer the angavastram over the shoulder of a silk kurta in ivory. A single rudraksha mala or a silver kada keeps the jewellery in honest conversation with the textile's devotional iconography.
Fabric & care
Wash this cotton dhoti separately in cold water on its first wash, as Sambalpuri ikat yarns may release a small amount of excess dye. Hand-wash thereafter using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, or machine-wash on a gentle cycle inside a cotton bag. Do not wring; roll in a dry towel to remove moisture, then dry flat in shade to preserve the woven stripe alignment. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades plant-based dyes over time. Fold along the original weave lines for storage and keep away from synthetic fabrics to prevent fibre stress.
