Cotton Dhoti with Angavastram Set and Zari woven Floral Border from Banaras
Machine or hand-wash cold, inside out. Air-dry in shade. Iron on medium heat. Wash with similar colours the first time.
Description
There is a quietude to white that only handwoven cotton truly understands. This dhoti and angavastram set carries the unmistakable signature of Banarasi craft, where zari is not merely ornament but a language spoken across generations of skilled weavers. The floral border, worked in fine gold zari against crisp cotton, reflects the kind of precision that Banaras has long reserved for its most ceremonial textiles. The fabric itself breathes with the ease that pure cotton affords, draping cleanly through the ritual movements of a puja morning, a wedding ceremony, or a festive family gathering. Available in a range of whites, from the stark brilliance of Brilliant White to the softer warmth of Snow White, each shade carries its own quiet distinction. The free size ensures the generous length required for a proper traditional drape, whether the Pancha or the Malayali style. Wear the angavastram folded across one shoulder for a classical temple occasion, or let it rest loosely over both for a more relaxed festive gathering. Pair with leather Kolhapuri chappals to complete the ensemble with understated grace.

SaleBehind this piece
Banaras has woven gold into cloth for over five centuries, and this cotton dhoti with angavastram set carries that inheritance quietly. The zari border, worked in the Banarasi tradition of supplementary weft weaving, draws floral motifs that echo the city's Mughal-inflected design vocabulary. Cotton as a ground fabric speaks to a different register than silk: cooler, more democratic, suited to daily devotion as much as ceremonial occasion. The angavastram completes the set as it always has, a shoulder cloth that signals both modesty and dignity in the South Indian and North Indian ritual imagination alike.
How to style
For a temple visit or grihapravesham, pair this set in Brilliant White with a raw silk angavastram shirt beneath and Kolhapuri chappals in natural tan. At a wedding reception, the Fiesta colourway worn with a fine Kanjivaram silk jabba and oxidised silver temple jewellery creates an assured, understated contrast. For a festive family lunch at home, choose Lucent White or Snow White, layer with a simple handloom kurta in ivory or ecru, and finish with traditional mojari footwear. In each case, allow the zari border to carry the embellishment without adding more.
Fabric & care
Cotton zari sets require gentle handling to preserve both the fibre and the metallic thread. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged water exposure weakens the zari's lustre. Do not wring. Lay flat in shade to dry, away from direct sunlight, which yellows white cotton over time. Iron on medium heat on the reverse side only, keeping the iron away from the zari border. Store folded in a fresh cotton muslin cloth, never in plastic, to allow the fabric to breathe between wears.
