Black-Onyx Pure Wool Long Jacket from Kashmir with Aari Embroidery by Hand
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
There are garments that carry weather in their weave, and this jacket is one of them. Worked in pure Kashmiri wool of the deepest onyx, it arrives as a canvas for aari embroidery, that singular needle-and-hook craft practised for centuries in the ateliers of the Kashmir Valley. Aari work demands extraordinary control: the artisan guides a hooked awl through taut fabric, building florals and paisleys in thread with a precision that no machine has convincingly replicated. The wool itself is dense yet surprisingly supple, offering warmth without bulk, and the long silhouette lends the jacket a quiet authority that reads equally well in a boardroom and at a winter wedding. Black, in this context, is not an absence but a depth, one that allows the embroidered motifs to emerge slowly, the way stars appear at dusk. Wear it over a fine ivory kurta with straight-cut trousers for a considered formal occasion, or pair it with a silk sari in jewel tones to let the embroidery hold its own against richness.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen have used for centuries to coax intricate chain-stitch florals from fine fabric. Concentrated in the villages surrounding Srinagar, this tradition flourished under Mughal patronage and endures today in family workshops where the technique passes from father to son. Pure Kashmiri wool, dense and insulating, forms the ideal ground: its tight weave holds each stitch without distortion. In this long jacket, the black-onyx ground throws the embroidery into sharp relief, making the needle's slow, cumulative labour unmistakably visible against the wool's matte depth.
How to style
Wear this jacket over ivory wide-leg silk trousers and a fine ivory silk camisole for a winter cultural evening; the length commands attention without effort. For a daytime gathering, layer it over a tailored cream churidar and juttis in antique gold leather. Come evening, pair it with a narrow pleated sari in charcoal georgette, gold Kashmiri silver filigree earrings at the ear, and block-heeled mojris in deep burgundy. The jacket's dark ground absorbs colour from its companions and returns it as quiet authority, asking very little of the accessories around it.
Fabric & care
Kashmiri wool holds its character longest when treated with restraint. Hand-wash in cold water with a small measure of mild, pH-neutral wool wash; never wring or twist the fabric. Gently press water out between two clean towels and dry flat in shade, reshaping the shoulders by hand while damp. Do not hang when wet, as the weight will distort the structure. Steam-press on a low wool setting with a pressing cloth between iron and embroidery. Store folded, never on a hanger, wrapped in a cotton muslin breathable bag away from direct light and cedar-free of mothballs.
