Pilkhuwa, a small town in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, has long been synonymous with block-printed cotton textiles. Known particularly for its bedcovers and dress fabrics, the town's printing tradition relies on hand-carved wooden blocks and vegetable-influenced pigments pressed onto pure cotton cloth. This skirt carries that lineage quietly: the bold paisley motifs and processional animal figures speak to a visual vocabulary rooted in Mughal decorative arts, translated over generations into everyday cotton. The black and white palette is a deliberate restraint, allowing the density of the print itself to do all the necessary work.
How to style
Wear this skirt with a crisp white cotton or khadi kurta for a clean, considered daytime look suited to gallery visits or relaxed Sunday markets. For an evening gathering, pair it with a fitted black silk blouse and oxidised silver jewellery from Rajasthan, letting the animal motifs carry visual interest. A third reading: layer it under a short handloom jacket in natural indigo and finish with leather kolhapuris in tan. The wrap silhouette allows generous adjustment at the waist, making it equally hospitable to styled dressing and unhurried, comfortable afternoons.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton from Pilkhuwa is durable but benefits from considered handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the first wash separate in case any surface pigment releases. Do not wring; instead, press the fabric gently between two towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade to preserve the sharpness of the print and prevent uneven fading. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp for a smooth finish. Store folded along the print lines to avoid permanent crease marks, and keep away from prolonged direct sunlight.
